Fiona's Secret World: Antony Rolland

ANTONY ROLLAND’S INTRICATELY
BEAUTIFUL WOOD WORKS INSPIRING

A prime delight in my business is discovering local emerging talent and introducing customers, local business people, and visitors to the city, to these artists.

Presenting Antony Rolland who believes we are all talented. He said this to me when describing his own process of self discovery. During an interlude of boredom, while working in the French military, he picked up a square sided wooden ruler and began fashioning a sculpted cane from it. This turned out to be a critical incident in his life as an artist.

If you refer to the accompanying images you can see how intricate Antony’s sculptures have become. Look at that sculpture reminiscent of a BC west coast native cedar basket. Antony’s work has become evolved and beautiful enough to be hung in L’Hôtel de Ville in Paris.

At present Antony favours painting. Check out his website at antonyrolland.com for his latest works in oils and aquarelles. Antony describes his work as containing reflections of “renaissance masters”. I see a little Cubism in his analytical and geometric approach to form and colour. Also, is that a dash of Miró, a flash of Chagall? Well, lively artists too, if not exactly all born in France like Antony. You can see from his quotes how self directed Antony is: that he aims to create his life with awareness rather than only reacting passively to circumstances. Inspired now by this land in BC which he was drawn to in 1999, Antony is giving us beautiful gifts in wood and oils as he carves out his future in the visual arts and invites us to share it. Let’s!

What visual memories do Antony’s work elicit in you?
